Joseph Avery, AU

Mr. Avery is an experienced and well-versed insurance underwriter leader with a wide range of experience focused on the commercial underwriting sector. He served as the Commercial Underwriting Officer at CNA Insurance for over 14 years, where he managed and led underwriting directors and underwriters. He began his career with Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, rapidly advancing from an underwriting trainee to a senior underwriter. During his 13-year tenure, he was promoted to Underwriting Supervisor and to National Product Manager. Additionally, Mr. Avery restructured the underwriting department at Willis Towers, implementing high-hazard MGA operations, where he served for more than six years. Throughout his career, he solicited and evaluated insurance applications, managed a team of middle market underwriters, and overseen the largest book of business. His achievements include developing and implementing underwriting policies and guidelines, as well as partnering with participating reinsurers. He has nationwide experience across various lines of business, including middle market, large property, foreign liability, inland and ocean marine, commercial auto and monoline umbrella. Mr. Avery is an AU and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Hartford in West Hartford, CT.
